Wherever you go in Cuba you will always hear the Name Jose Martí. Whether it is on their currency, the names of schools, the country's National Airport or the countless monuments dedicated to him. Even in the US there are so many statues of him such as in Central Park, New York. Who is he? Why is he so important?Jose Martí’s legacy’s were freeing Cuba, creating a Cuban identity and broadly creating a Latin American identity.
One of Jose Martí’s legacies was to strengthen a strong Cuban identity and foster the Cuban Revolutionary momement. Even though the Cuban revolution that Jose Marí was fighting for failed, he still brought freedom to Cuba. He kept on inspiring revolutionaries to fight relentlessly even if the odds were stacked against them. Fidel Castro has always claimed that Martí was a crucial inspiration for Cuba’s Communist revolutionary government. Without Martí Cuba would of never gotten enough people to fight for their freedom. Although Martí’s help with this Cuban revolution was important, his legacy of nationalism, anti-imperialism helped define the Cuban identity. You can see his effect on Cuba because even though they are a developing nation they are still very proud about their nation. An example would be the independence song Guantanamera which is a Jose Martí poem and was turned into a Cuban cultural song. This demonstrates the strong nationalism that Jose Martí left behind.
Jose Martí also left a broader intellectual legacy that developed the Latin American identity. Many of his concepts such as freedom and democracy have inspired poets like the Chilean Gabriela Mistral and Nicaraguan poet Rubén Darío. He is widely considered one of the best Latin American poets and intellectuals of all time. His writings are taught all around the world. His philosophies on a wide range of issues from race and racism to the relationship between the US and Latin America are still referred to today. The Castro regime and opponents of the Castro regime both use him to justify their arguments. Jose Martí was a influential character that left behind a legacy that influences Latin American identity as a whole.
